Does Your Home Need Insulation?
Is your home too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter? Your solution might be insulation. In the cold winter months, heat is trying to escape your home. In the hot summer months, heat is trying to enter your home. You may also remember from middle school science class that heat rises, which means approximately 40% of the heat that you loose in the winter is going through your attic. The solution is to add a quality insulating product to your attic to regulate the temperature in your home more efficiently.
With a properly insulated and ventilated home, you’ll be able to manage and mitigate excess heat and humidity more effectively. Plus, you can extend the life of your home. Insulation and ventilation will also protect against ice dams, sagging roof decks and premature roof failures.
The ability of an insulating product to resist the transfer of heat is measured by “R-value.” The higher the R-value, the better its ability to resist the flow of heat. According the U.S. Department of Energy, the homes in our area should maintain an R-value between R-38 to R-60. That means you need approximately 12-25 inches of insulation in your attic. Most homes build before 1995 are usually substantially below that number.
