8 Tips to Make Sure Your Home is Winter Ready?

Is Your Home Winter Ready?

It is that time of the year to make sure your home is winter ready. Cold temperatures, snow and ice can cause higher energy bills and damage to the exterior and interior of your home, if you aren’t prepared. Here are some tips to make sure your home is ready for the winter months.

1. Block Drafts

Simply blocking drafts from entering beneath doors can reduce your energy costs by 5 to 30 percent. Purchase a draft dodger snake or make your own before you turn on the heat this year.

2. Seal Windows

Another way to significantly reduce drafts is by insulating any drafty windows. You can pick up an inexpensive plastic kit from your local hardware store. It also might be time to consider replacing them.

3. Caulking and Weather-Stripping

Seal gaps around your doors and the entry points of any pipes or wires that run along the foundation of your home. This will reduce the amount of heat that might leak out.

4. Check Attic Insulation

Since warm air rises, a poorly insulated attic can be one of the biggest culprits in winter heat loss. If you can see ceiling joists, you don’t have enough insulation in the attic. Ask your roofing contractor to add enough to reach the R-value recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy.

5. Trim Back Branches

Trim back branches that brush against the roof or that could fall on the roof under the weight of snow and ice.

6. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Don’t forget to reverse your ceiling fans to redirect warm air back down into living areas.

7. Clear Your Gutters & Downspouts

A blockage prevents water from correctly draining correctly and can result in water damage to your foundation, landscaping, or siding.

8. Winer Roof Inspection

Have a roofing professional walk your roof to look for broken shingles, nail pops, and damaged pipe jacks. All of which can result in water intrusion.
